 Haeundae
« Thread Started on Oct 3, 2009, 7:18pm »

Just saw Haeundae today (2:15 @ Kapolei) and was really pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The reviews I had read before seeing the movie weren't all that complimentary, but as a k-drama watcher, I found that it had everything--made you laugh, made you cry, made you cringe, left you satisfied in the end. Although Ha Ji Won and Kyung Gu Sol had top billing, I loved Lee Min Ki best in his role as a Coast Guard-type rescuer. [image] Ha Ji Won was luminous without make up and used a Busan accent throughout.

I think the comedy came at key times in the movie in the way that k-dramas offset sadness with a comedic touch to give the audience some emotional relief. It worked here as the audience laughed and cried on cue. There were many familiar faces and that was strangely comforting, too.

The special effects were spectacular and was actually quite sobering as it brought to mind the recent tsunami in Samoa and other disasters occurring around the world. :-[

I definitely will buy the DVD when it comes out! [image]

I saw it too...twice actually, with 2 different groups of people.

The first time, I have to say I was disappointed. I was expecting a disaster movie and the disaster didn't come until well over an hour into the film. And there were some scenes during the tsunami that made me think, "Huh?" and some that made me laugh at the silliness. I know that in traditional disaster films the first half is to get to know the characters and to build up the oncoming disaster but I just wasn't feeling it.

Then funnily, I saw it again the next night and enjoyed it a lot more. Perhaps because this time I knew what to expect and wasn't sitting there hoping for the wave to hurry up and come already. This time around I found the character buildup more interesting and engaging. Who knows why?

I really enjoyed all of the Haeundae director's previous films (well, except for Romantic Assassins. That movie was pure crap)
and I was glad to see him take on the large budget and A-list cast.

If you're not familiar with his previous work, his past films include the classic Korean comedies "My Boss, My Hero" and "Sex is Zero" as well as "Miracle on 1st Street". "Haeundae" is his 3rd movie working together with Ha Ji Won.

So I would recommend checking out the film. It's not a bad way to spend 2 hours.

Just saw it again today and still laughed, and cried, and left satisfied. Noted some details I didn't notice earlier, too. Lee Min Ki still my fav. in this.

LMK was on Entertainment Relay's Guerrilla date this week (replays on Sat. morning on ch. 80) and was much shyer than expected. With his knack for comedy, I thought he would have been loud and brash like some of the characters he plays, but he was very humble and soft spoken. Even though he loves to sing and is thinking of going that route, he was too shy to sing during the interview. The anchors referred positively to his role in Haeundae. [image]

Actually, if you payed attention to the background music played during parts of the interview, you'd notice that the songs were off of Min Ki's debut mini-album "No Kidding". I bought the CD, and most of the tracks were composed/written for Min Ki by foreign artists (Kid Loco, Popular Computer, One-Two [the Parisian duo, not the Korean one], Weekenders); only the first track was written/composed by the Korean indie rock band Screw Attack.

Might also want to check out EP 91 or 92 of Kim Jung Eun's Chocolate, Min Ki performed the track "Eternal Summer" off of his album on that episode. Even there, you can see why Min Ki doesn't go on many variety shows--so shy & awkward, but nonetheless, cute!

From what fans in the Philippines have posted while Min Ki was there to film the movie "Romantic Island" he is really great with fans, even when the bodyguards aren't allowing them to come close. He's the kind of person that if you treat him with respect like with any other person, he'll respect you in the same way. Just don't go grabbing at him like what I've seen some fans have done...when that happens, he gets away as fast as he can.

Wow, thanks for sharing, Creidesca, I didn't know he already had something recorded--from the interview it sounded like this was a new venture for him. I am totally surprised that he is a singer since he was so uncomfortable in the interview. Sounded like they really tried to get him to sing for a while but he refused. He looked great with his hair styled, tho -- not the chawan cut he uses in most of the dramas! :D

Just watched "Haeundae" from a download. I guess my opinion is different from others. I thought it was an okay film. Some of the actors were really good (Lee Min ki, Ha JiWon and some of the pthers that we see quite often. The lesser actors were not so great.
Like I said, an okay film, just not cracked up to what it was supposed to be.
Just my opinion! [image] ;)
Maybe I need to see it again, like some of you did?

Or maybe the experience would be different had you been sitting in a theatre setting?

To each her own--there were some reviews by Americans that didn't like it either. My expectations when I went to see it weren't great given those reviews, maybe that's why I liked it so much?

I do think watching it in a theatre had a big impact, tho. Everyone around me was sniffling or laughing out loud. Even the guys that I know who saw it were moved by it.

I saw this movie recently; thought it was good, although I wasn't especially enthralled with the "romance" of HJW and KGS. I laughed and cried, especially for LMK and Uhm Jung Wa, etal. I think it made a big difference seeing it on the big screen, as the special effects were awesome. My fave was LMK's role. I'm reminded of a few of his recent dramas which made me a fan: Evasive Inquiry Agency, Dal Ja's Spring, and (my fave) I Really Really Like You. If anyone hasn't seen him in these, I recommend you check them out.
